What's the Problem at Safeway?

[ Jeremy's Letter | Safeway's Response | Food and Drug's Response | Analysis ]
SAFEWAY/GENERAL MILLS CASE

The consumer case against Safeway and General Mills is a matter of consumer trust versus sexual orientation discrimination. This is compounded by inexcusable customer service and the sale of a Betty Crocker product in illegal condition. During this shopping trip the acting Safeway Store Manager called me and my partner ' fags ' and refused our initial ATM payment for the goods finally purchased. Furthermore, upon arriving home we discovered that the condition of one of our Betty Crocker Instant Mashed Potatoes packages had been tampered with prior to sale. Additionally, the factory sealed mashed potatoes package contained a green hair like substance. The following letters and chemical lab analysis give documented expression to the occurrences of our Safeway/General Mills experience.

It should be noted that the lab sent General Mills written notification of the time and date of product analysis along with an invitation to be present at the time of analysis. General MIlls ignored the invitation and gave no further recognition of the seriousness of the illegal condition of their product sold at Safeway.

Dear Amy Kinyon:
I was delighted to receive your e-mail, then phone call regarding your experience at Safeway in Pinole. The case we have against Safeway hinges in large part on the sexual orientation remark made to me and my partner on the evening of October 13th, 1999, by Rory, the P.I.C.at Safeway that evening in Pinole. According to your letter and statements to me the other evening, your case against Safeway involves sexual harassment by Rory of Safeway store employees, which according to you is being currently handled by your union on behalf of several of your fellow female same store employees.

I have consulted with my attorney and we still feel confident that legal and civil charges brought against Safeway by us and your parties together would be beneficial to the justice of this case. If however, you feel that proceeding against Safeway independently would be more to your liking, that is understandable. Please feel free to use our statements by subpoena in court for your case, as we will do in our case against Safeway.

Please contact me at any time regarding this matter.

Best,

Jeremy L. Dorosin

My name is Amy, and I am an employee at Safeway in Pinole. I was unaware of the problem you and your friend had at my store back in October. I read Safeways response to your complaint about our manager, I'm assuming if it was a sexual comment it came from Rory. I think Safeway should investigate him a little further because he has made several "sexual suggestions" to many
female employees in his short time at our store. In my oppinion, I do not doubt one bit that he indeed made a comment about you and your friend.

He is a pig. I have made a complaint to our store manager about a problem I personally had with him, but I think it went in one ear and out the other.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but I wanted you to know that most of the employees at Safeway are not as rude as "the managers". And I am sorry , for the hassel you recieved.
